My apologies, the AMA is very persistent doing everything they can to stop the message from getting out hence the external links change quite frequently.
"The maximum amount of mercury that the Environment Protection Agency allows people to be exposed to is 5,000 times smaller than the permissible amount of lead exposure; in other words the EPA apparently considers mercury to be 5,000 times more toxic than lead."---- Marcia Basciano DDS at annual meeting of IAOMT San Diego 1994.
Remember this when searching documents from the AMA and the ADA. They are political organizations. Political organizations usually get their start for a good purpose but like the Department of Veterans of the Revolutionary War, they usually out live their usefulness. The AMA's may have a purpose but their bureaucracy has grown until they are like working in a flower pot with a D9 Cat and about as adroit.
Link:: Check the and the gag rule they have on the dentists to NOT talk about the dangers of mercury amalgam fillings.. Ever since dentists first started installing amalgams in patients' teeth there has been an issue as to whether mercury is released and causes health (pathophysiologic) problems. Then in 1984 a group of conscientious dentists formed the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). One of their objectives was to scientifically explore the safety of amalgam restorations. Since 1984, members of the IAOMT have inspired many renowned medical scientists at universities around the world to research possible pathophysiologic effects associated with mercury leaking from amalgam restorations. Consequently, there are a growing number of scientific studies that document pathophysiologic effects associated with amalgam mercury.
Now, that being said; I presented much of this information to my dentist whom I consider to be very good and he declared the whole matter to be a bunch of garbage and countered by saying none of the information pointed to any conclusive studies and more importantly they have been using silver (he always said 'silver' fillings as opposed to mercury amalgam) for 150 years. He said he would send me information supporting his side. So that is where it stands, there is information both ways. I think I will hold my final decision until I can find out something definitive one way or the other.
My dentist sent me some info on 'amalgam' fillings. I will enclose part here that you can make up your own mind.
By Craig Palmer
Washington--- The government across the board is planning to set up review in the near term of the science and regulatory bases for dental amalgam, the most studied and longest used restorative for decayed and damaged teeth.
Congress, government health, regulatory and research agencies, the public and the dental profession are engaged in a dialog that is about to expand. Congresses' interest alone gives an indication of the increased attention accorded a restorative placed in billion of teeth over the last 150 years. The House Government reform Committee Nov. 14 convened what is believed to be the first congressional hearing focused primarily on mercury in dental amalgams.
"Not only is dental amalgam safe, it remains a valuable restorative option for dentists and their patients because it is so effective," the American Dental Association testified at the hearing. Dr. J. Rodway Mackert, professor of oral rehabilitation at the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry, represented the ADA and Dr. Gregory Stoute, president of the National Dental Association, testified for the NDA.
The full text might be available on the WEB, I suggest checking the ADA site. There was a much more convincing article included from the Columbia University that supported amalgam safety that I'm sure you will find at the same place.
I suspect that someday it will be found the truth lies between these
extremes.

Introduction
Fundamental Health Flaws
A "silver filling" is a euphemism for an amalgam restoration, which a dentist places in a patient's tooth after a cavity is created by drilling out decay. Amalgam restorations consist of mercury, silver, tin, copper, and a trace amount of zinc. The dental amalgam has two fundamental flaws that adversely effect a patient's health. The first fundamental flaw is that all amalgam metals are cations. The net result of the tendency for covalent, ionic and metallic bonding and van der Waals forces between amalgam cations is a weak repulsion. So there is a sustained release of mercury and other metals from the amalgam into the body. Researchers have measured a daily release of mercury on the order of 10 micro grams from the amalgam into the body. Mercury is a toxic metal; the most minute amount damages cells.
The second fundamental flaw is that there are five dissimilar metals in the amalgam. Galvanic action between these metals in inevitable (the dissimilar metals form a battery). Galvanism produces electricity that flows through the body. The electric currents produced by the amalgam typically are between 0.1 and 10 micro amps, compared to the body's natural electric current of 3 micro amps.
The mercury challenges systemic functions of every individual and of developing fetuses, so it can lead to health problems and fetal malformations. Mercury leakage and its subsequent pathophysiologic effects are most often slow, insidious processes. So health problems caused by dental mercury poisoning are perceived many years after the amalgams are placed.
Maine Dentists Required to Inform Patients About Amalgam Dangers
Maine Governor Angus King today signed the most advanced bill in the United States requiring dentists to inform their patients that amalgam dental fillings contain a large percentage of the toxic element mercury, which can be harmful to the wearer's health.
In his preliminary remarks before signing the bill, Gov. King noted that Maine has probably taken more action to get mercury out of the air and water than any other state in the union. "And yet we all carry it around in our mouths," he remarked.
Senate President Michael Michaud spearheaded the bill and Representatives Joanne Twomey and Steven Stanley, all of whom were present, spoke at the signing. Consumer advocates Pam Anderson and Dr. Tom Anderson, a mercury-free dentist from Houlton, ME, who led grassroots support for the bill, participated in the ceremony as well.
Maine Senate President Michaud cited the courage of the many individuals who testified on behalf of the bill, especially the dentists who came forward to endorse it despite the opposition of the American Dental Association. "We hope that the U.S. will take Maine's lead and move forward with legislation at the national level," he said.
The bill mandates that every dentist's office will feature a poster and a brochure informing patients about the presence of mercury in amalgam fillings and about its negative health effects.
Scientific research has shown that dental amalgam is the chief source of mercury in the human body. For that reason Rep. Twomey described the bill as a major step forward for women of child bearing age and for children, who receive their first exposure to mercury in the womb and from their mother's breast milk.
Mercury has been implicated in neurological disorders of children such as autism and ADD/ADHD, and in fertility problems in women.
"We are delighted that this bill has been signed," said Rep. Stanley. "It is a major step forward to protect the health of Maine citizens."
Pam Anderson added that the group hopes Maine's next step would be to ban the use of dental amalgam in all women of childbearing age and in children.
"The public is being deceived by the terminology used for these fillings," said Charles Brown in his remarks. "The ADA calls them "silver" fillings, but they are really mercury fillings. If people knew the principal ingredient is mercury they would not want these fillings in their teeth."
Gov. King compared the current use of mercury in dental fillings with the 1950's use in shoe stores of powerful x-ray machines called fluoroscopes, which exposed hundreds of thousands of adults and children to high doses of toxic x-rays.
"Every child who went into the shoe store to buy new shoes would put his feet into the fluoroscope so the bones could be seen," King recalled. "People who worked in the store were exposed to the radiation all day; children played games around the machine.
Now we realize it was a terrible thing to do, but then it seemed perfectly normal.

No More Mercury Dental Fillings!
Welcome World!
Bonjour!
INTRO TO BAN MERCURY IN TEETH EVER WHERE PETITION: Silver “Mercury” dental fillings are 50% Mercury, and release mercury vapor every time you chew, brush, or grind your teeth. Between breathes, the mercury vapor levels reach 50,000 ppm and higher within your mouth. The levels drop off 10 minutes after chewing, brushing, or grinding. This level is higher than the safety limit for a factory or other workplace. (Source: 60 Minutes, CBS Television) You inhale and exhale this mercury vapor [which is absorbed by the lungs, transferred to the blood, and goes into major organs including the brain] regularly for the lifetime that the fillings are in your teeth. What you are not told is that doctors who diagnose mercury vapor poisoning in factory workers are warned to "regularly monitor worker mercury levels (in urine tests)” because workers were being diagnosed as hypochondriacs. Some workers had little or no mercury in their urine but were showing classic symptoms of mercury poisoning [depression, anxiety, weakened immune system, tremors, insomnia, and dozens of other ailments] (Source: Alberta Government Occupational Mercury Guidelines)
So doctors are now told that mercury poisoning for factory workers must be monitored in Groups, as individuals show widely varying reactions to mercury vapor. That is why we are asking you to sign the Ban Mercury in Teeth Everywhere Petition. Groups of people with mercury dental fillings are significantly less healthy than groups without (Source Siblerud et al, University of Colorado), and persons who remove their mercury fillings recover from a host of ailments (Source: 60 Minutes, CBS Television). Dentists dismiss this as “anecdotal” evidence [Individual Recoveries are meaningless], but medical doctors on the other hand are warned that Individual Diagnosis of mercury poisoning in factory workers is meaningless. Both cannot be correct, the fact is Group Poisoning and Recoveries are the Medical Method of determining mercury poisoning, and the American Dental Association (ADA) and Worldwide Dental Associations (WDA’s) are afraid you will find this out. They say they care about your health, but what they really care about is getting sued. For 150 years they have deliberately avoided looking at Groups of people with and without amalgam fillings, and deliberately ignored recoveries from having fillings removed, and claimed that “theirs” is the scientific position. If the ADA and WDA’s are scientific, then workers in factories must be diagnosed individually for mercury poisoning, and hypochondria allowed as a common diagnosis….
From the June 2002 Idaho Observer: Mercury Amalgams: Do you still have a mouth full of them? by Ingri Cassel
After two of my dear friends were plagued with health problems that were only minimized by natural healing programs, it was discovered that they were both suffering from acute systemic mercury poisoning and the main source of this insidious poison was in their mouth.
Both of these women have a mouthful of aging mercury amalgams. It has been shown that mercury is continually released from mercury dental fillings in the form of mercury vapor and abraded particles.
This process is further stimulated and can be increased as much as 15-fold by simply chewing, brushing teeth, hot drinks and even swishing your mouth with a solution of hydrogen peroxide (used to reduce dental plaque.)
>What we have been lead to believe are “silver” dental amalgams actually contain 48-55 percent mercury, 33-35 percent silver and various amounts of copper, tin, zinc and other metals. For decades the American Dental Association has steadfastly maintained that the mercury in dental amalgams is bound to the other metals in such a way that the mercury could not possibly escape.
However the ADA's assumption was proven wrong in 1985 when two researchers demonstrated that the air inside a mercury amalgam filled mouth continually contained elemental mercury vapor, and the dynamic of chewing increased this vapor level substantially.
Mercury is extremely poisonous, accumulating over time in the various tissues of the body, particularly the brain and kidneys. Published research from two scientists at Utah State University shows that mercury is more toxic than lead, cadmium and even arsenic. Even world regulatory agencies such as the World Health Organization (WHO) have stated that the smallest amount of mercury that will not cause damage is unknown.
In fact, the WHO recently concluded that the daily intake of mercury from amalgam dental fillings exceeded the combined daily intake of mercury derived from air, water and food (including fish).
In human autopsy studies it has been found that there is a direct correlation between the amount of mercury found in the brain and the number and surfaces of mercury fillings in the mouth. Recent scientific research has shown high levels of mercury in the brains of Alzheimer's disease victims. Furthermore, laboratory studies of spinal fluid from both Lou Gehrig's disease and Alzheimer's disease patients have confirmed the presence of high levels of mercury that inhibit key brain detoxification systems.
Despite these findings, the American Dental Association and various agencies in the U.S. government still support the use of mercury amalgam dental fillings. They claim that they are safe based on 150 years of use and that there is no scientific proof showing mercury exposure from dental fillings causes any known disease.
There are higher concentrations of mercury in the autopsied brains of patients who died of Alzheimer’s than are present in the autopsied brains of patients who did not have Alzheimer’s.
