The Left Wants to Be the Architect of the Matrix

In the movie The Matrix, the world appears real, yet every sight, sound, and thought is controlled by someone else.

That is the role the Left seeks in artificial intelligence.

AI chatbots can be useful for recipes or old movie quotes. Ask about politics, however, and the bias becomes clear.

While most Americans enjoy AI’s novelty, left-wing activists and Big Tech allies are embedding their worldview deep inside the code. They are not only shaping conversations but programming machines to think as they do.

MRC’s Free Speech America has documented it repeatedly. Chatbots sided with Planned Parenthood after the SCOTUS Medicaid ruling. They displayed an anti-American slant when asked about Independence Day. The reason is obvious: major AI firms rely almost entirely on left-leaning media sources.

Open AI holds contracts with at least 21 left-leaning outlets — The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Financial Times, Vox Media — and only two conservative sources: Fox News and the New York Post. Amazon partnered with The New York Times. Google selected the Associated Press. Among outlets rated by AllSides, 59% lean left, while only 5% lean right.

This is orchestration, not coincidence.

The upper-class media are losing influence. AI is fast becoming the next gatekeeper for news and information. Control over the “input” will determine the “output” — dictating what is true, what is false, and what is visible at all.

That is why I wrote to Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought and FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson. These deals restrict competition, embed a single ideological perspective, and undermine the diversity of sources essential to neutral AI. Courts have ruled public material can be used for AI training, making exclusive deals appear more like payouts to friendly outlets.

Even AI’s own leaders have admitted the risk. Sam Altman warned about manipulation and persuasion. Sundar Pichai said bias review is “extraordinarily important.” Elon Musk called the systems “politically correct” instead of truth-seeking. Even Kamala Harris conceded: “The machine is taught … what information is going into the machine … will determine what then will be produced in terms of decisions and opinions.”

That is the entire strategy. Control the code, and the culture follows.
